Complete Streets

Complete Streets are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Complete streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They can make it safe for people to walk to and from transit stops. One the benefits of the MPOs proposed Design Guidelines is that they would allow for flexibility in application. The images below illustrate how a street design might be applied in a downtown urban area.

What does a Complete Street look like?
Features of complete streets include buffered sidewalks, bike lanes, accessible transit stops, underground utilities, access management controls, fewer travel lanes, right of way adjustments and well designed intersections. A complete street in a rural area will look quite different from a complete street in a highly urban area, but both are designed to balance safety and convenience for everyone using the road.

Land Use Context Areas & Road Types
The Advisory Group has developed context areas and road types for this area.  These context areas and road types work as overlays to the traditional land uses and road classifications used in city and transportation planning.  They give a better representation of the built environment and the Complete Streets amenities that would be expected for a given area.

The Advisory Group recommended preliminary approval of the context areas and road types on January 22.  The Technical Committee recommended preliminary approval on February 27.  The Policy Committee gave preliminary approval on March 20.

Complete Streets Advisory Group

The Advisory Group, consisting of various transportation stakeholders, is assisting throughout the Complete Streets process.
