Farmington, NM
- During the last two weeks, Farmington Police Department’s animal control officers have responded to several incidents of animal neglect. The incidents involved citizens leaving their pets inside their vehicles with the windows closed or slightly down, exposing the animals to extremely high temperatures. On one particular incident, the interior car temperature was recorded at 142 degrees. Extreme temperatures, even for a short period of time, create a hostile and life-threatening environment for animals. The investigation of these incidents over the past two weeks has led to multiple citations being issued. The penalty for this violation is $100 fine.

Farmington Police Department wants to remind pet owners about the dangers of leaving their animals in vehicles during the hot summer months. Pet owners are required to provide proper care and shelter under city ordinance. Citizens are urged to report any type of animal abuse or neglect.
