Complete Streets Project on Schedule: Phase 2 to begin Mid-June

Posted on June 4, 2020 at 3:27 PM by Georgette Allen

Time for a Complete Streets project update!

Phase 1 of the construction in downtown Farmington is on schedule and moving right along. If you haven't seen the weekly project summaries on our website at, please be sure to check them out. The summaries include details about completed work, such as upgrades to the waterline and storm drain system, electrical and lighting improvements and the installation of new, wider sidewalks. The sidewalks will enhance pedestrians' experience as they stroll through downtown Farmington and will create opportunities for businesses to offer outdoor seating and dining. Also available in the summaries are weekly goals so citizens can see what workers are focusing on for a seven-day time frame.

As Phase 1 is transitioning to its final stages for substantial completion by the end of June, we have the opportunity to move up the timeline for beginning Phase 2 with an anticipated start date in mid-June. We will announce a firm start date as construction continues. The preparation stage for Phase 2 began on June 1 with saw cutting and removal of benches, trash bins and other items. Asphalt removal will take place on June 8.

Remember, all public parking lots and alleyways are open and accessible. Pedestrian access to all buildings will be maintained. Anyone with questions about the Complete Streets project may call the City of Farmington Community Works Department at 505-599-1308 or Complete Streets Headquarters at 505-599-8443.

The Complete Streets Project kicked off on January 6, and now a month in, we're happy to report it's ahead of schedule! AUI, the general contractor, used several local subcontractors to safely and quickly remove the old concrete, asphalt, and traffic signals. The quick removal allowed AUI's utility crews to begin waterline work a week earlier than originally scheduled.

As of Monday, crews have completed the installation of nearly 1,000 feet of 12-inch PVC waterline. Starting this week, they will install a new water main along the side streets, new 1 1/2-inch water services, and the 6-inch firelines. By upsizing the water service lines and providing fireline stub outs to each building, owners can expand their existing businesses, complete upstairs renovations, or attract a greater selection of businesses, such as food establishments, in the future.

A local electrical subcontractor installed the temporary pedestrian lighting along the walkways for public safety. And it's caught the attention of community members who've been sharing photos of the gleaming lights on social media.

Thanks to AUI and our subcontractors for completing work ahead of schedule and keeping the project moving on time! And a big THANK YOU to our wonderful community for their continued support of downtown businesses - now and always!
