Farmington, NM - On August 4 at approximately 12:00 p.m. Farmington police responded to a domestic disturbance in the 2900 block of LaPalma. The suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Aaron Montoya, had left the scene and was armed with a handgun. FPD’s K9 unit was dispatched to conduct a search of the area. A perimeter was established and Police Service Dog Cas was used to search the area. San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deputies also assisted in the search. At approximately 2:00 p.m. Montoya was found in a secluded area, pacing with the gun in his hand. Officers surrounded Montoya and verbally engaged him in an effort to de-escalate the situation. Montoya was focused on PSD Cas barking at him and ultimately he dropped the handgun and went to the ground. Montoya was taken into custody without further incident. He was arrested and charged with child abuse and battery against a household member. Montoya is being held at the San Juan County Detention Center on a $13,100 bond.
