Role of the Traffic Unit
The primary role of the Traffic Unit is enforcement of traffic laws, the investigation of traffic crashes, and investigation or DWI related stops and crashes.

The Farmington Police Department serves a population of more than 45,000 and patrols more than 33 square miles. The department's certified officers participate in a number of selective enforcement efforts. These programs are administered through the New Mexico Traffic Safety Bureau and Safer New Mexico Now.

Community Programs
These grants include programs such as Operation DWI (ODWI), Community DWI (CDWI), Operation Buckle Down (OBD), Click it or Ticket, and Selective Traffic Enforcement (STEP) Program. All of these programs are geared toward gaining voluntary compliance of the citizens with regard to violations that contribute to traffic crashes.

The Traffic Division addresses concerns using the most appropriate methods. A few of the methods used are enforcing traffic laws, speed trailers (aid in driver education and driver awareness), and traffic counters (which aid in data collection, indicating the total number of vehicles, time of day roadway is most commonly used as well as average speeds).
