District Coordinator Unit
Duties of the District Coordinator Unit

The District Coordinator Unit (DCU) is comprised of four District Coordinator Officers assigned to specific areas within the city. There are four code compliance officers that are also assigned to the same specific areas of the city. The DCU officers partner with the code compliance officers when necessary for code enforcement. There are two bike patrol officers that are primarily assigned to the downtown area, east retail corridor area, and city parks.

The District Coordinator Unit is a community policing/problem oriented policing unit. The community policing effort promotes neighborhood watch programs, partners with faith based and community action groups, business watch programs, crime-free multi-housing programs, schools, civic organizations, business professional organizations, and other law enforcement organizations.

Part of the community policing effort is education of the public about crime prevention. The DCU is involved in the Citizens Police Academy and the Women Against Crime Program. Crime Prevention Education in addition to those established programs DCU officers frequently do presentations, educating citizens about crime prevention, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) safety improvements to residences, businesses and multi-housing areas. DCU officers are frequently requested for public speaking engagements, radio shows, or print media interviews. Crime prevention material is provided to the public at community events such as Freedom Days, River Fest, and Kid Fest. DCU officers are also certified child restraint system technicians involved in car seat fitting stations and public education about car seat safety.
