The Farmington Police Department is a progressive, nationally accredited agency, dedicated to providing community oriented police services. The department strives to maintain the professional standards which have established it as a leader in law enforcement in New Mexico. Divided into various divisions, such as patrol, detectives, and administration, the department proactively responds to community concerns through several community based programs. 155 people are employed by the department, 125 of which are sworn officers. Benefits such as 25 year retirement, four-day work week, take home cars, paid physical fitness time, generous vacation and sick leave, and educational incentives make Farmington Police Department an excellent employment opportunity.

Prior to assuming an assignment to the Patrol Division, non-certified officers will attend a local 25 week academy. The academy is operated with the cooperation of San Juan College. Cadets receive college credit while attending the academy. After successful graduation, cadets will undergo a 14 week field training program before being released for solo duty. Applicants who currently hold officer certification, either in New Mexico or another state, may be eligible for lateral entry. A $5,000 bonus will be paid to lateral officers certified in another state who are eligible for New Mexico certification. Lateral Officers currently certified in New Mexico are eligible for a $15,000 bonus.

Successful graduates from the recruit academy are assigned to the Patrol Division. Police Officers have responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crimes, apprehension of criminals, and enforcement of laws and ordinances. The Police Department utilizes Community Policing and problem solving in providing services.
